Coinbase Has a Marketing Campaign for the Ages

One of the biggest, and more recent, sensations in the digital world is the rise in popularity of non-fungible tokens, aka NFTs. At the highest and easily explicable level, these tokens are a one of one piece of art (i.e. song, image, or video clip). People can buy one on an internet marketplace; OpenSea is a popular one. Then, you own the original file, and can show it off on social media, and it gives owners “clout.” NFTs have become wildly popular, and even expensive in the resell market given the exclusivity and popularity. One company that’s hopping on this NFT trend is Coinbase, and they have a huge promotion that should be in marketing training guides for all students of the game!

One of the most popular NFT collections is called the Bored Ape Yacht Club, an image of a monkey that has thousands of unique images, and regularly resells for millions of dollars. A collection of 101 Apes recently sold for over $24 million dollars. Suffice it to say, this has hypebeasts drooling at the money, the “coolness” of owning an NFT, and showcasing “drool worthy” pieces of art. NFTs are exploding, and the Bored Apes are at the pinnacle.

Coinbase, a cryptocurrency trading platform, knows the NFT popularity, has the technological infrastructure, and wants to capitalize on the money, users, and buzz. They recently sent out an email to their database encouraging users to download their new “Coinbase Wallet,” an app that allows users to store, send, and receive their cryptocurrency and NFTs.

What’s more, they’re giving away a Bored Ape to users; this is an incredible marketing stunt, and one that had this author downloading and sharing on Twitter immediately. And the hashtag was going off too – posts every second – check it out!

Coinbase killed it with this marketing campaign! Marketers, take notice. You can take advantage of hype with your new product releases. Coinbase showed that they know their target audience, and hit social media and email marketing channels like pros. Kudos Coinbase!
